Education History
To many, my current state and place in society is overlooked and often unacknowledged, and with good reason. On paper there is nothing eye-catching about my achievements, I graduated high school in Houston, I am a healthy woman (both physically and mentally), and by the end of the school year, I will have completed my basics at Blinn college. These ‘bland’ milestones, however, have significant importance to me personally. Every person’s tenure on this earth comes with challenges, and my time here has and will be no different. The uniqueness then is not whether a person’s life was easy or hard, but rather how they dealt with the hardships they faced. In the short time I’ve had here, one trait has allowed me to overcome my unfortunate circumstances and persist, adaptability.
I graduated from high school in Houston, but my story didn’t initially start there. I was born in Brooklyn, NY and to two immigrants from El Salvador. As a child, our poor financial situation never negatively affected my state of happiness. I had loving parents that shielded me from the evils and that was enough for me, as is the case for most children. My first obstacle in life came when I was 2 years old. My father, in a road accident, passed away. With my father’s stream of income now gone, New York living had become too much of a financial burden and my mother moved us to Houston. With a broken heart and a new environment, I had to adapt to these new variables placed unto me. I found peace of mind through my relationship with Christ, although it was and continues to be a battle of understanding and acceptance, he has allowed me to process and deal with the circumstance in a healthy manner. I also pushed myself to socialize with the new people around me and I am fortunate to have healthy relationships around me that give me support in times of need. So, while on paper a degree from a Houston high school is unremarkable to most, I had to adapt to unfortunate circumstances in order to attain this achievement.
My next step was to further my education. As the daughter of two immigrants who never stepped foot into a classroom of higher education, it was my goal to make the most out of the education that the United States had to offer. With my financial situation acting as a shackle, it became apparent that a junior college would be the first step in my journey to receiving a bachelors degree.
