  • Additional Info Accepted to The University of Alabama Huntsville, Fall 2019, majoring in aerospace/astronautical engineering, minoring in physics.

All my life, I have been fascinated with space. When I graduated preschool I responded to the question we get asked all our lives by saying “When I grow up I want to be an astronaut.” Since then, my ideas have been slightly modified, but nevertheless space influenced. Now, I am hoping to become an astronautical engineer. I intend to study Aerospace/Astronautical Engineering so that I can pursue my passion for a career in a space-related engineering field. My interest is mainly in the space side of the field so that I can be a modern-day explorer, enhancing humanities understanding of our universe. I do not intend to become an astronaut, but rather to become part of a team working on projects and missions that may or may not send people into space, to enhance our knowledge of what lies beyond Earth’s atmosphere. I do not believe that the sky’s the limit because there are footprints on the moon telling me otherwise. Going into the next chapter of my life, my intention is to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree, then a Master’s Degree in engineering and then to obtain a Ph.D. in Astrophysics. I have always had an interest in space, from building model rockets with my Dad and launching the rockets near our home, to viewing the stars through a 6-inch reflector telescope on top of our mountain. I subscribe to Astronomy Magazine and have just begun subscribing to Sky and Telescope. Space is a barely explored frontier for humankind and I want to be a part of contributing to that exploration in some fashion. My true career passion is to become Doctor Brooke Buchanan in a profession exploring the universe. With STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) careers advancing today’s society, I believe the future lies in those fields. With such goals in mind, it is necessary for me to choose the best path that leads to the ending I hope for. Be it the road less traveled or the one more worn out, I look forward to taking the chance that the path I choose is the right one. The University of Alabama Huntsville is the right choice for me. After all it is “Rocket City”. This university is a short walk from Cummings Research Park. It is the home of nearly 300 companies, more than 26,000 employees and 12,500 students. Because of this, it makes receiving internships and starting a career that much more efficient and likely to happen than other universities. I had the privilege of touring the high-tech university over Christmas Break. I was given an intensive, all-day tour and met many professionals that work at the university. In addition to having a large and well-known aerospace engineering program, they have a program that allows me to pursue my masters at the same college after completing the bachelor's program. In fact, I can even start taking classes towards my masters while completing my bachelors, saving me time and effort from transferring to a new college to complete the program. While I pursue my passions at The University of Alabama Huntsville, I will search for an internship that could lead to my end goal. For example, the Sierra Nevada Corporation is one aerospace/astronautical company that resides in the park. If I were to get on as an intern here I could potentially find myself working for them if they saw me fit for the job. In doing so, it is likely that I could transfer to their company in Louisville, Colorado. Here, I could live in a mountain-top home, only having to commute 45 minutes, much like everyone does here. This way I would not have to give up my homegrown roots and love for the mountains. As far as getting my Ph.D., I am in hopes that a company would help pay for my advancement in education since it would be for their benefit as well if I were working for them.

    SKILLS
  • Additional Info It is important for me to give back to the community through community service organizations and personal initiative to help others. I am very involved in Sierra High's Leo's Club and the service projects that we have taken on. The Leo Club is part of Lion's Club International, a service organization. The most important project for our Leo's Club is Kases for Kids, where we travel approximately 40 miles to Fresno, to organize suitcases for kids who've been placed into Foster Care. The suitcases contain toiletries, clothing, and personal items based upon the children's age and sex. My Dad is a retired law enforcement leader and my Mom is a 4th-grade teacher in an economically depressed area, so I had heard about kids being removed from their parents by Child Protective Services (CPS). I totally get how children being removed by CPS and placed into Foster Care, would be a horribly traumatic situation; not to mention the circumstances leading up to being removed from their family. In some small way, my volunteering time to help make this process a little better for the children placed into CPS better is the very least that I and the Sierra Leo's Club can do for the less fortunate among us. I am a recruiter for the Sierra Leo's Club, with Kases for Kids being the project that I personally have volunteered for the most, putting in an estimated 125 hours of volunteer time.

I also volunteer my time through the Sierra Leo's Club, to help out at Project Survival Cat Haven, located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains near our school. Project Survival is a labor of love, to help save the apex predator big cats globally. Project Survival raises money and awareness about the plight of the big cats on earth. Volunteering to help with the upkeep of the Cat Haven, allows the organization to spend their time and money where it can be better used, helping to save the big cats and placing new cats back into their former habitat. This is a project that Leo's Club has recently become involved with and I estimate that I've put in approximately eight hours volunteering at the Cat Haven.

Additionally, I have been a Band Member for the regional Old English Dance Society rehearsals at the California Arts Academy and the Auberry Library, playing fiddle for the group's old English dances. At the invitation of a former fiddle teacher, I have volunteered my time for almost three years and have purchased music books of old English dance, fiddle, and other tunes that the group learns dances for. The Old English Dance Society adds to the quality of life in our community as other cultural groups do through increasing our awareness of the many cultures that make up our community. I estimate that I've volunteered approximately thirty-seven hours playing time to the Old English Dance Society.

It's important for me, to give back to my community so that in some small way it makes where I live and beyond a better place. Community service will be a lifelong commitment for me.
