  • Additional Info I was born in 1999 in a military family. When the planes hit the twin towers in 2001, my mom knew my father would be sent to war. He was am Army Sargent stationed in Fort Hood, TX and was deployed in early 2004 to Iraq. So that year, my family had settled into the day-to-day routine of waiting till my dad would return. I was five years old and I didn’t know my life was about to be turned upside down.

Early in the morning of Aug 3, 2004, we received a knock on the door that would change our lives forever. My dad had been killed. It wasn’t something a 5-year-old can easily understand or even accept. From that point, I would have to go through life without my father. After almost 2 years of trying to build a new life for ourselves near the Army base, my mother moved me and my sister out of Killeen Texas.
We moved to Cedar Park, TX. It was a way to break from the past and start a new better life for me and my sister. I started the second grade that following year. As I proceeded into middle school, I got involved in the band and later switched to choir. I was in choir for two-and-a-half years, and I truly enjoyed it. In 7th grade, I joined the track team. I competed in the 100 and 400 relays. As I continued to high school, I joined the Color Guard team. I loved Color Guard, as it was physical, and required a strong involvement in the program and a lot of discipline to accomplish all the figures in perfect synchronicity with the band. I would perform at every football game during halftime and got to travel to new places for competitions. My involvement in Color Guard has shaped me into the person I am today. I learned so many skills like leadership, time management, working as a team to achieve a goal, and I made many friends while I was there. I had practice every day after school, while still maintaining an A/B honor roll.

At the end of my sophomore year, my mom re-married, and we moved, which meant I attended a different High School. It was hard to make new friends, and adjusting to the new surroundings was difficult for me. While I was involved in the Dance Guard, it wasn’t as exciting as Color Guard in my previous school and so I looked for other opportunities to do something motivating.
So, during Junior year, I volunteered for "Meals on Wheels" where I delivered prepared food to the elderly in the Austin area, which gave me an interest in the service industry. At the end of that junior year, I decided to apply for a Hospitality internship for the upcoming year; where I would get to work as an intern at a hotel and experience all of the different departments and jobs of the hotel industry. I was very motivated by this opportunity, so I carefully filled the form, wrote the required essay for it, got written recommendation from my teachers, and proceeded to the interview, where I did my best to hide my intimidation and nervousness, pushed through it and gave it my all. Unfortunately, I found out two weeks later that I was not selected for the internship. I discussed my disappointment with my mom who recommended that ";if you truly want something, you have to be persistent, you need to go and show how much you really want it and maybe the person running the internship will change her mind.". So I emailed the teacher, and went to her office to speak to her on how much the internship really meant to me, and how I would love to be in her class, and after four months a spot did open up and I was selected; I was so excited because my persistence paid off, and I realized that if I want something, nothing is out of reach with some hard work.
That Senior year internship took place at the Embassy Suites in downtown Austin. During that experience, I changed roles and got to work for the food and beverage service, for housekeeping, front desk, in the laundry room and finally with the banquet team. I enjoyed that internship because I got to work with my hands, interact with customers and see all the work that goes into running a hotel. While I was in high school I also picked up a job at Carrabba's Italian Grill as a hostess, and I worked there for two years, I worked full time during the summer, and part-time on the weekends when I was in school, I liked it because it kept me busy, gave me a source of income and allowed me to spend time outside of the house. All these experiences in hospitality were interesting, gave me a sense of responsibility and hard work, even if ultimately that is not the field I want to go into.
After high school graduation, I decided to attend Austin Community College, with the intention of working on my core classes to give myself some time to think about where I want to orient my studies and with a clear goal of getting my Bachelor's degree after transferring to a 4-year university. Over a year ago, I decided to pursue a degree in criminal justice. I have this dream of working for the FBI and fight injustice and abuse, particularly of women and children being trafficked. But in general, I want to serve my community, make my father proud by becoming my family’s first college graduate, and as an African American woman, ensure that my community is served with respect and decency. To reach this goal, I know I will have to work hard, overcome my learning disability (dyslexia) but I know from my past that hard work and dedication pays off when the goal is worth it.
